2017- A Year of High Hopes and Expectation

We usher in 2017 with an open heart and high expectations. 2016 had not been a very good year for Malaysia and the rest of the world. There were major political conflicts, internal unrest, national upheavals and even wars in various regions of the world. Malaysia is particularly hit by very low crude oil prices and a depressed economy. The Ringgit is at an all time low against the dollar and so is our stock market which is one of the worst performers in this part of the world. With the introduction of Goods and Service Tax (GST) in 2016 and increases in food and basic necessity prices, Malaysians are further burden with this increase cost of living. This is especially true for our senior citizens.
So what to expect in 2017? Especially for Senior citizens in Malaysia! The senior citizens community has contributed much to national development in Malaysia. We have worked hard to make Malaysia into what it is today – prosperous, harmonious and peaceful. In fact, senior citizens are still contributing to the socio-economic transformation of the country to make Malaysia a high income economy by the year 2020.
2017 will not be a easy year for Malaysia in general and the senior citizens community in particular. We have to work hard to rehabilitate our economy and improve our social and welfare systems. As we enter into 2017, we expect crude oil prices to recover quickly to at least US$50 per barrel. This will definitely play a significant role in our economic recovery. What we need to do is to improve efficiency and increase productivity. We have long been dependent on commodity, petroleum and manufactured goods for exports. Recently, we have emphasized on the contributions of the service and digital sectors to the economy. This is where the senior citizens community can contribute significantly with their vast knowledge, experience and expertise. NACSCOM will work closely with the Government to harness these assets of the senior citizens community to contribute towards economic recovery. Senior citizens must also take cognizance of the present difficult time and strive to contribute towards economic recovery through active participation in our economic transformation.
NACSCOM, as the national body representing senior citizens, will like to alert the government on a rapidly ageing population in Malaysia. We will be an ageing nation by the year 2030. We have to take this factor into consideration in our development planning and getting ready for an ageing society in 2030. Many factors such as financial security, medical and health care, social and welfare services, housing and the built environment, transportation, recreation and other support services for the older persons have all have to be taken into account. It is only a decade away. We have to start now.
We wish that 2017 will be a good year for all senior citizens in Malaysia.
